RISQ 3.2 for Third Officers – LSA, FFE, Documentation & Drills Focus
Duration: 3-4 Hours
Objective: This course is specifically designed for Third Officers to provide a focused and practical understanding of relevant chapters of Rightship RISQ 3.2, with particular emphasis on the management, maintenance, and readiness of Life-Saving Appliances (LSA), Fire-Fighting
Equipment (FFE), statutory documentation, and the planning and conduct of onboard drills. The program equips Third Officers with the knowledge and practical skills required to maintain compliance, support the safety management system, and meet RightShip vetting expectations with confidence.
Target Audience: Third Officers, junior deck officers, and officers responsible for LSA/FFE maintenance, safety
documentation, and emergency drills onboard.
Participants: Maximum 6 participants
Language: The course will be conducted in English.
Course Structure: The course follows a structured progression through Rightship RISQ 3.2 from a Third Officer’s perspective. It begins with core safety and statutory requirements, advances through practical onboard implementation of LSA and FFE management, documentation control, and drill execution, and concludes with real-world inspection scenarios and common vetting observations relevant to Third Officers.
Methodology: The course employs interactive lectures, practical shipboard examples, real inspection case studies, group discussions, and scenario-based exercises to ensure effective learning and direct applicability onboard.
Course Description: This course provides an in-depth, Third Officer-focused overview of the safety-related chapters of the revised Rightship Inspection Ship Questionnaire (RISQ 3.2). Emphasis is placed on areas where Third Officers are directly assessed during inspections, including inspection, maintenance, and testing of LSA and FFE; familiarization with emergency equipment; control and upkeep of safety-related documentation; and planning, conduct, and evaluation of emergency drills. Participants will gain a clear understanding of inspection expectations,
common deficiencies, and best practices to ensure continual readiness and compliance.
Course Requirements: Basic knowledge of shipboard safety duties and familiarity with SOLAS, ISM Code, and applicable maritime regulations. Prior experience with vessel inspections is beneficial but not mandatory. No prior RISQ experience is required.
Expected Outcomes: Upon completion of the course, Third Officers will be able to:
1. Understand RISQ v3.2 requirements relevant to LSA, FFE, documentation, and drills.
2. Ensure proper inspection, maintenance, and readiness of all LSA and FFE onboard.
3. Maintain accurate, up-to-date safety and statutory documentation.
4. Plan, conduct, and document effective emergency drills in compliance with regulations
and vetting expectations.
5. Identify and rectify common safety-related inspection deficiencies.
6. Support the Chief Officer and Master in maintaining high onboard safety and HSQE
standards.
7. Reduce vetting observations through proactive safety management and preparedness.
8. Awareness of the importance of good Mental Health and problems associated with
mental health.
