Objective: This course is specifically designed for Second Officers to provide a focused and practical understanding of relevant chapters of Rightship RISQ 3.2, with particular emphasis on Navigation and Radio Communication requirements. The program concentrates on the Second
Officer’s responsibilities in passage planning, navigational watch-keeping, use and maintenance of navigational equipment, GMDSS operations, and emergency communication preparedness. The course equips Second Officers with the knowledge and practical skills required to support
the bridge team, maintain compliance, and meet Rightship vetting expectations with confidence.
Target Audience: Second Officers, Navigational Watch-keepers, and officers preparing for promotion who are responsible for navigation planning and radio communication duties onboard.

Language: The course will be conducted in English.
Course Structure: The course follows a structured progression through Rightship RISQ 3.2 from a Second Officer’s perspective. It begins with navigation-related requirements, advances through practical bridge and chart-room implementation, and concludes with real-world inspection scenarios and common vetting observations related to navigation and radio communication.
Methodology: The course employs interactive lectures, practical bridge and chatroom examples, real inspection case studies, group discussions, and scenario-based exercises to ensure effective learning and direct onboard applicability.
Course Description: This course provides an in-depth, Second Officer-focused overview of the navigation and radio communication chapters of the revised Rightship Inspection Ship Questionnaire (RISQ 3.2). Emphasis is placed on passage planning standards, chart and publication management, bridge procedures, watch-keeping practices, use of ECDIS and navigational aids, record-keeping, and compliance with COLREGs. The course also focuses on GMDSS equipment readiness, radio log maintenance, emergency communication procedures, and typical vetting observations related to radio communication. Participants will gain a clear understanding of inspection expectations, common deficiencies, and best practices to ensure safe navigation and effective communication at all times.
Course Requirements: Basic knowledge of navigational watch keeping and familiarity with SOLAS, COLREGs, GMDSS, and applicable maritime regulations. Prior experience with vessel inspections is beneficial but not mandatory. No prior RISQ experience is required.
