What is a P&I survey?

A P&I survey is an independent marine technical inspection undertaken to document factual conditions, damage, evidence and other technical matters relevant to a P&I claim or marine incident.

When should a P&I survey be arranged?

A survey should normally be arranged as soon as practicable after an incident so that relevant physical conditions and evidence can be documented before affected areas are repaired, moved, cleaned or otherwise altered.

What types of incidents can PAMS survey?

The scope can include vessel damage, cargo damage, machinery casualties, grounding, collision, contact damage, flooding, fire-related damage, heavy-weather incidents and other marine casualty matters subject to the agreed technical scope.

Does a P&I survey determine liability?

No. A P&I survey provides independent technical observations and factual evidence. Legal liability, insurance coverage and policy interpretation remain matters for the relevant parties, insurers, P&I interests and legal advisers.

Does PAMS provide a written report?

Yes. Following attendance, PAMS can provide a structured technical survey report including factual observations, photographic evidence, technical findings and matters requiring further investigation where applicable.

Can PAMS investigate cargo damage?

Can PAMS assess machinery damage?

Can a P&I survey replace a class survey?

No. A P&I survey is an independent technical and factual assessment and does not replace classification surveys, statutory inspections, specialist examinations or other mandatory inspections where required.
