Case Study Overview

This case study presents an independent lifting appliances inspection and load testing assignment performed by PAMS Pacific Admiralty Maritime Services for shipboard cranes and lifting equipment.

Project Challenge

The vessel required re-certification of its 40-ton deck cranes following a period of layup. The lifting appliances needed to be assessed and tested before being returned to normal heavy cargo operations.

The technical challenge was to establish the condition of critical crane components, identify any defects that could affect safe operation, and verify the lifting appliances through appropriate inspection and dynamic testing.

Particular attention was given to structural components, critical welds, sheave arrangements, wire ropes, pins, hooks, and other components subject to operational loading and fatigue.

Technical Attendance & Inspection

PAMS Pacific Admiralty Maritime Services performed a systematic technical examination of the lifting appliances before the dynamic load test.

Visual Examination

Critical crane components were visually examined for deterioration, deformation, corrosion, abnormal wear, damage and other conditions that could affect safe operation.

Structural Assessment

Crane structures and critical load-bearing areas were examined with particular attention to welds, connections and high-stress locations.

NDT Examination

Non-Destructive Testing was performed on selected critical weld joints and components to identify defects that may not be visible during a conventional visual examination.

Dynamic Load Test

Following inspection, a dynamic load test was conducted using water bags to verify the operational performance of the cranes under the specified test loading.

The deck cranes were subjected to a 110% dynamic load test using water bags following completion of the inspection and NDT activities.

The load testing programme provided an opportunity to verify the crane's response under controlled loading conditions and to confirm the operational condition of the lifting appliance before return to heavy cargo operations.

Technical Findings

The inspection identified defects that required attention before the lifting appliances could be considered ready for unrestricted heavy cargo operations.

Sheave Pin

A hairline crack was identified in a sheave pin during the technical examination. The defect was not readily apparent during standard daily operational checks.

Wire Rope Wear

Excessive wire rope wear was identified and required corrective attention before the crane could be returned to normal heavy cargo operations.

Critical Components

The inspection demonstrated the importance of detailed examination of crane components that may experience fatigue, wear and repeated operational loading.

Corrective Action

The identified faulty components were replaced before completion of the load testing and final assessment.

Following identification of the defective components, the required corrective work was completed before the lifting appliances were subjected to the final operational assessment.
